This year we’ve seen some truly great work come to the fore in animation and film. All eyes were on Channel 4’s campaign for the Paralympic Games, which turned to face patronising comments head on. Co-op also seemed to catch your eyes with an ad set in motion by a receipt printer. And everyone was pretty keen to find out what exactly was inside (the film design) for Bukayo Saka’s new Nando’s sauce.
As for animation work that struck a chord this year, many of our most read stories sat inside the music scene. Will Wharton and Hugo Shiboski created a hypnotising 3D world inspired by Puerto Rican plants and Roger Rabbit for the band Bad Bunny, whilst Jenny Lucia Mascia, Jeremy Higgins and their team of animators crafted spellbinding visuals for musical trio Khruangbin; and Joseph Melhuish made awe-inspiring music posters with VR.
Analogue techniques also made a comeback this year with Iris Wildros’ hand drawn, meditative animations mesmerising us all, and Stefano Colferai’s hilarious claymations of everyday life stealing the show — a reminder that some of the best works in motion always have the warm and grainy charm of imperfection. Explore all these and more below!
