We all love to hate and in the world of graphic design the clear culprit for the most hated font has long been the infamous Comic Sans. So, of course you clicked when Thomas Steeles claimed to have unearthed its origin story. You type-loving lot might have initially paid this year’s top story a visit to see if there was anything else you could dislike about it, but a close reading may have seen you have a change of heart over this contentious creation.
Unlike last year, however, it wasn’t just type design and big branding that took the top spots, You were keen to ruminate on the shortcomings of the design world with our POV on the problems with unpaid pitching being one of the most popular stories. You also wanted to deep dive into the industry’s obsession with mockups and uncover the ancient and otherworldly charm of Future Medieval graphics with our US editor-at-large Elizabeth Goodspeed, this (Black Letter, not Brat) summer.
As always, branding for food and drink made its way to the top stories this year, but you seemed to have a particular love for projects adopting a graphic language that was a bit of a blast from the past. You (ahem) feasted your eyes on: Matty Matheson’s new retro packaging with pure primary coloured 1930s can-core designs; Little Troop’s 70s retrofuturist branding for Cliik’s pantry storage system, and designer Jingqi Fan’s 90s-inspired new look for New York Eatery MáLà, to name a few. Scroll down to discover more of our Top 25 Graphic Design stories this year.
