Graphic designer and art director Eric Hu has joined Nike as global design director on sportswear. The LA-born multidisciplinary creative leaves behind his position as director of design at Ssense, which he held for two years during which he led its rebrand.
We first wrote about Eric in 2012, and have been following his career over the years as he graduated Yale’s prestigious MFA course in 2013 (interview here) and launched Talk magazine in 2015. In late 2016 he worked with Matt Tsang to design Mold Magazine, working on the launch issue cover with photography by David Brandon Geeting.
He was founding partner at Nothing in Common, a New York-based creative technology studio that worked with The New York Times, Ninja Tune, Columbia Records, Phillip Lim and Nike. He’s also an adjunct professor at New York’s School of Visual Arts. As a freelance designer he’s also worked on logo designs for Satié, Leong Leong architects, Art Palestine International and Bangkok City Gallery, plus record sleeves, posters, book covers and artwork for a range of clients such as Adidas at The New Museum and Fat magazine.
On his website he describes his work as “pairing maximalist image-making with typographic nuance”.
