This year’s Dazed 100 features global change-makers including Azeema, Cho Gi Seok and Mohamad Abdouni
Dazed and Converse have picked a roster of 100 individuals across activism, art, fashion, entrepreneurship, film, music, photography and beauty – all of which are in the running for mentorship and $30,000 grant.
Dazed has announced its annual Dazed 100, launched in partnership with Converse and featuring a list of 100 people shaping youth culture globally. Now in its seventh year, the 2021 roster spotlights those steering change across activism, art, fashion, entrepreneurship, film, music, photography, beauty and more, which includes names such as photographer Cho Gi Seok, Guts Gallery co-founder Ellie Pennick, publication and platform Azeema (and It’s That’s Ones to Watch 2020), photographer Mohamad Abdouni and more. All of which have been curated with help from past Dazed 100 alumni, including Young Thug, Slowthai, Quil Lemons, Tyler Mitchel and Alima Lee.
Through a public vote that will announce ten finalists and one winning individual – judged by Dazed and Converse – who will receive mentorship from Converse and a project brought to life and funded with $30,000. Dazed will also commission five talents others to contribute a piece of writing or photography for the site Dazed Digital.
Each nominated individual has been chosen for their impactful work to date and the winning creative will have their project brought to life through the grant and mentorship. To give an idea of the work that would be created, photographer Mohamad Abdouni would print Treat Me Like Your Mother, a book uncovering the history of queer communities in Beirut; Azeema would create a hub and studio in London as a base for the team; Ellie Pennick would invest in a space to exhibit artists from different backgrounds who are neglected in the art world; and Cho Gi Seok would create a project using old Converse shoes.
This year’s Dazed 100 runs alongside Open To Change, a partnership between Dazed and Converse that aims to increase opportunities, education and representation in the creative industries. The announcement also follows the recent senior team changes, with Ib Kamara appointed as the new editor-in-chief and Lynette Nylander as executive editorial director.
Kamara says in the release: “This year, we’ve taken our original mission of empowering youth through creativity one step further. The Dazed 100 is truly geographically representative with more creatives from a greater number of countries, selected by a greater number of people than ever before with talent living in cities new to the list including Accra, Beirut, and Tel Aviv.”
Previous names who have featured in the Dazed 100 list include musician and artist FKA twigs (2015); designer Virgil Abloh (2015); photographer Tyler Mitchell (2016); and climate activist Greta Thunberg (2019).
