For 18 years, creative platform Playgrounds has organised festivals and conferences across Europe that connect international creative juggernauts and put them all under one roof. Safe to say, Playgrounds festivals have established themselves as cornerstone events within the global creative landscape. In 2023, the In Motion festival made a resounding debut in Rotterdam (hot off the heels of the London edition), captivating audiences with its innovative blend of animation, motion design and digital art. This September, In Motion returns to Rotterdam, promising to elevate the creative bar even higher. The Maassilo, a former industrial behemoth, will once again be transformed into a dynamic hub for artistic expression. Meanwhile, the London festival will follow in mid-October.

A constellation of global talent, from industry titans to emerging visionaries, will all converge at the Maassilo. Expect mind-bending installations, thought-provoking talks and electrifying performances. Last year saw panel discussions with the likes of Daniels (Oscar-winning directing duo of Everything Everywhere All At Once), Patrick O’Keefe, Kirsten Lepore and more at the festival, with beautiful displays of their work to boot. This year In Motion is no different in its breadth of talent, many of whom are It’s Nice That favourites: from the likes of YONK, Vincent Schwenk and Ines Alpha to filmmakers Becky & Joe, Jenkin Van Zyl, Megaforce and UntitledArmy – there are ample opportunities to get a precious insight into the creative processes of some of the best creators working in the digital arts today.

If that isn’t enough to ignite your curiosity, festival goers will also have the chance to meet and mingle with industry professionals. There will be a great selection of funds, broadcasters and interesting platforms to engage with. At the heart of the event, It’s Nice That’s own Lucy Bourton will be hosting a panel of industry experts, dissecting the future of creativity and answering some of your most burning questions, such as how to break into the digital arts or how to source fresh inspiration.

Beyond the spectacle and excitement of a festival, In Motion is a catalyst for collaboration and innovation. Playgrounds carefully ensures that their In Motion festivals are exciting grounds for new ideas to get their first footing. For Playgrounds, In Motion is not as simple as festival goers being audience members – instead, everyone is encouraged to be a participant. Ideas ignite and the next generation of creative leaders are forged, and Rotterdam, with its forward-thinking ethos, is the perfect stage for this dynamic gathering. For years, Playgrounds has been the alchemist turning talent into gold, so it’s no surprise they’re committed to making their In Motion festivals bigger and better than ever as the years go on.

In Motion Rotterdam will take place from 19-20 September 2024, and you can catch the London festival at the Barbican Centre from the 10-11 October.
