Two weeks ago we shared the huge news that we’ll be hosting our first ever Nicer Tuesdays event outside of London – in New York of all places! We couldn’t be more excited to dip our toes into the wonderful creative scene the city has to offer.
With 27 June rapidly approaching, we’re now pleased to share our star-studded line-up. Gracing the stage will be design legend and Pentagram partner Emily Oberman, the tech-savvy creative director and former Nike global design director Eric Hu and the brilliant Shawna X, an artist with a penchant for all things kaleidoscopic. Read on to find out more about each of our speakers.
The event will be taking place at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. It’s a seated event, so make sure you get there early to ensure a seat and pick up a drink beforehand! Doors open at 7pm and the talks will begin shortly afterward. Tickets are $18 + fees.
Please be aware that photography and filming may be taken at this event for marketing and promotional purposes. If you do not want to be photographed or filmed, please speak to our team on the day. Also, if you are in need of disability access, please email hello@nicertuesdays.com so we can arrange assistance with the venue team.
When it comes to designing for the entertainment industry, few do it better than the prolific Emily Oberman. Over her illustrious career, she’s completed work for Warner Brothers, Steven Spielberg flicks and has spent many years working closely with Saturday Night Live, creating many of its identities and even an expansive book documenting its rich visual history. Well known for her exciting and energetic approach to design, if Emily is on the project, you can be sure that bums are on seats and eyes are on the screen. She’s also been at the forefront of creating work for marginalised groups, including an identity for an LGBTQIA+ members club and safe space. At Nicer Tuesdays New York, we’ll be getting precious insight from Emily about what it takes to build such a successful career and dreamy client list.
Kaleidoscopic, vibrant and playful are all words that could be used to describe the awe-inspiring work of Shawna X. An artist who uses projects to show the vast potential of colour and texture, at Nicer Tuesdays she’ll be discussing her project Cyclical Everything, a series of 10 mesmerising glass artworks at the Elmont LIRR station in Long Island and her first permanent installation. Shawna will share the process of switching up medium, turning digital work into something tangible that interacts with light and space. Throughout, she’ll also be touching upon wider industry topics, like how to maintain a sustainable practice as a creative, and working as an artist and parent. It’s set to be an enlightening one, that’s for sure.
Now, more than ever, it feels as though the creative landscape is dictated by the online realm and rapid changes in technology – which can be pretty daunting. That’s why it’s great to have individuals like creative director and typographer Eric Hu on the scene. A creative whose career has been shaped by the internet, Eric has been known to incorporate new technologies such as NFTs and novel techniques like coding into his work, while always being vocal around their potential pitfalls. In this talk he’ll be walking us through some of his recent work, whilst also taking the plunge and diving headfirst into one of the most hotly debated topics in the industry right now – AI. Want to know how technology might impact your work in the future? This won’t be one to miss.
