Seeing in the summer months, this June we’ll be holding our fourth Nicer Tuesdays talks event in New York. We’re excited to welcome back those who are now nice and familiar with our US events, as well as welcoming some new faces too: if you haven’t been to an event yet – where have you been! This time round we’ve got a bumper line-up with not three, but four creative talks to enjoy.
Heading the line-up is none other than creative director extraordinaire Hassan Rahim, who will be sitting down with It’s Nice That’s US editor-at-large Elizabeth Goodspeed, shedding light on his career to date, working with some of the most respected names in the cultural sphere. Also taking to the stage will be the illustrator of atmospheric scenes, Karlotta Freier, plus Sophie Mascatello of creative company Mythology will be taking us through the art of branding, and Poupay will be telling us about all the drama of photographing antics at the Oscars.
At June’s event there will be two activations to keep you occupied before the event and during the intermission. MPB will hosting a professional portrait photographer, so if you’re in need of a new LinkedIn picture, prepare to let loose and unleash your inner star! Pre-register here today to secure your spot. Meanwhile the renowned papersmiths GF Smith will be taking over the walls of SVA to showcase the work of up-and-coming design students from Manchester School of Art, one of the UK’s top arts schools. So if you’ve ever fancied a good old nosey into what design students in the UK are producing, now’s your chance to find out. The students have been tasked with creating a 12” vinyl record cover that responds to a soundscape created to represent the 55 colours of GF Smith’s signature colorplan paper: expect beautiful results!
The event will take place on Tuesday 18 June at the beautiful School of Visual Arts Theatre in Chelsea. Doors will open at 6.30pm and the talks will begin at 7pm. The full address is SVA Theatre, 333 West 23rd Street, New York, NY10011.
Please be aware that photography and filming may be taken at this event for marketing and promotional purposes. If you do not want to be photographed or filmed, please speak to our team on the day. Also, if you are in need of disability access, please email hello@nicertuesdays.com so we can arrange assistance with the venue team.
The self-described “creative director and high school dropout” Hassan Rahim has spent his career creating publications, posters and visual worlds, for some of the most regarded names in the cultural world. Under his “anti-disciplinary” creative studio 12:01, which launched last year, Hassan has collaborated with the likes of Criterion Collection, A24, Capsule magazine, Mana records and BLKNWS, highly sought after for his ability to create something that gets to the heart of the project, while always simultaneously offering a new perspective. He’s also created works for musicians like Nine Inch Nails, Lorde and Kelsey Lu; most recently he designed photographer Gabriel Moses’ stunning monograph. What’s allowed Hassan to create such a vast and unique body of work? Always thinking with “his gut”, and letting intuition take the lead. At May’s Nicer Tuesdays he’ll be offering insights like this and what it takes to work yourself to the top of your field with conviction and class.
It seems some people are born to take pictures, and Poupay is one such person. She kicked off her career as a street photographer, traipsing the streets of New York to uncover some of the strangest and most eccentric scenes she could possibly find, which fulfilled her inner self – “I have sarcasm running through my veins”, she once told It’s Nice That. Though, in recent years Poupay has made something of a massive shift, from street to editorial photography for some of the biggest publications. This line of work has resulted in one of her most significant gigs to date for The New York Times, rubbing shoulders with the stars at one of the most sought after events: the Oscars. Poupay will be shedding light on how she made such a shift, and how she’s managed such a change.
If there were one word to describe the work of illustrator Karlotta Freier, it would be atmospheric. Her dreamy style has a certain warmth and relatability to it, full of organic, sketchy black lines and muted hues and calm, pensive scenes. In her own words, she once told us that she always aims “more for atmosphere than cleverness”. It makes sense that she was commissioned by the fashion brand Hermès to create a series of beautiful animated shorts to celebrate this year’s Lunar New Year. Karlotta will be talking us through how the project came about, her response to it, the development, and taking on one of the biggest challenges of her career to date – her first time animating.
The creative agency Mythology has carved a space for itself in New York’s design scene by creating impactful visual content for a wide range of clients. Whether its multidisciplinary team is creating packaging for Euphoria’s makeup artist’s line, or a series of films (starring Jake Gyllenhaal, no less) for a plant-based egg company, you know it will be done with meaning and style. At June’s Nicer Tuesdays, Sophie Mascatello, Mythology’s head of design, will be joining us to talk through just what it takes to build an iconic brand, from the necessity of good editing through to that climactic moment when you know you’ve made something that’s going to resonate.
