“More roles, more movement, more churn, more newness”

Our advice column is taking the time to wind down and reflect on the last six months. Alex Bec takes us through his experience on sharing advice and his hopes for 2025 in this week’s Creative Career Conundrums.

Creative Career Conundrums is a weekly advice column from If You Could Jobs. Each week their selected panel of professionals from the creative industry answers your burning career questions to help you navigate the creative journey.

Every week our talented roster has been answering our reader submitted questions. Now that the year is drawing to a close – we thought they’d like to take a break. We’ve taken over this week’s question to give our advice givers a chance to look back and forward to the new year.

This week’s question:

Think back on the questions you’ve answered—what common themes or topics came up? What are your hopes for 2025? And are there any areas or topics you’re excited to explore more in the new year?

Alex Bec, CEO of It’s Nice That, Creative Lives in Progress and If You Could Jobs:

As I take a moment to reflect on my first year being an agony uncle for this column, it’s undoubtedly been a year of challenges for our audience of jobseekers. I think you’ll all be happy to see the back of 2024! From a career and job perspective, 2024 has been a year of continued uncertainty, and, in general, a lack of opportunity for so many. There were any number of requests for advice around lacking confidence or inspiration, navigating change, or regaining control of your work. And far less (i.e. zero) requests for help navigating an abundance of new opportunities, or choosing between lots of exciting options for a career.

“Double down on the crucial, long-term work of inclusivity and diversity in our industry that it needs so badly.”

Alex Bec

But enough of the doom and gloom – my hope for 2025 is that we see abundance! More opportunities; more roles, more movement, more churn, more newness, more optimism and a booming creative economy providing opportunity for all. Would that be too much to ask!? I’m hopeful that creative companies of all sizes will continue to invest in emerging creative talent alongside the inevitable focus on exciting technological advancements and double down on the crucial, long-term work of inclusivity and diversity in our industry that it needs so badly.

I’m hoping that personally, and as a set of businesses, we can keep growing our work across It’s Nice That, Creative Lives in Progress and of course If You Could Jobs. And with it, continue to arm creatives everywhere with opportunities, advice and the chance to empower their own creative potential.

Failing that, can I just have Man United win the premier league? Or even just make top four? We can all dream.

In answering your creative career conundrums we realise that some issues need expert support, so we’ve collated a list of additional resources that can support you across things that might arise at work.
