Thomas Ralph: I am Not Afraid for Harry’s

Director Thomas Ralph and creative agency Brothers & Sisters have created an ad for male grooming brand Harry’s razors featuring England captain Harry Kane. Tentatively perched on top of a crossbar, Kane’s monologue discusses and rebukes stereotypes of masculinity. The ad comes a month after Gillette’s controversial We Believe ad, which challenged men to hold other men accountable for sexual harassment and bullying.

Filmed in Chingford in London, the 30-second monochrome slot features footballer Kane balancing on the crossbar at a flood-lit pitch, both powerful and vulnerable. A voiceover by Kane says: “I am not afraid to lead, I am not afraid to be criticised, to ask for help, to tell my daughters I love them. I am not afraid to be myself and if that makes me different, I’ll choose different every time.”

Commenting on the slot on Instagram, Ralph said, “It’s not every day you get tasked with filming the England captain balancing on a crossbar, as a die-hard Spurs fan you just don’t want to break him!”
