Taschen's celebration of 15 years of Sneaker Freaker magazine will be out later this year
If you’ve ever queued in the cold for a Yeezy drop, have an opinion about an Air Max 1 colourway, or keep pristine boxes of Jordans stacked in your bedroom, you might be interested in Sneaker Freaker, a new book published by Taschen this November.
The book will pay homage to the cult magazine Sneaker Freaker and the anthology is made over 15 years, highlighting its beginnings as a punk-style fanzine, and its 2002 beginnings with Simon ‘Woody’ Wood – who, as legend has it, dreamed up the mag in an effort to get free shoes – to today’s super-slick offering.
The magazine has made its name in the sneaker community for documenting collabs, customs, and limited edition retro reissue of the ever-fascinating and iconic piece of athletic wear. The 650-page anthology looks to map now and then from the sports shoe’s celebrity endorsements, to the iconic Air Max bubble advertising (they make you run faster, right?) and how sneakers transcended the football pitches, basketball courts and athletes tracks to create play a vital role in street fashion and suburban culture.
Sneaker Freaker starts at the Yeezy shoe and works backwards over 100 years, celebrating the high (tops) and lows of sneaker culture, Michael Jordan, to Run DMC and beyond and will be out in November.
