Tate to appoint first woman director, the Whitworth's Maria Balshaw

Tate is set to appoint its first woman director, Maria Balshaw. Maria is currently director of Manchester’s Whitworth Gallery and Manchester City Galleries, and credited with the resurgence of the city’s art scene. The announcement, though already reported by The Times, has yet to be formally made by Tate. According to reports, her name has been put forward to government and awaits agreement from Theresa May.

Former director Nicholas Serota stepped down after 28 years in September 2016, and will next month begin his new role as chairman of Arts Council England. Since he left, Maria has been the favourite for the job. In her current role she is responsible for the artistic and strategic vision for the galleries she directs, and is also director for culture for Manchester City Council. Under her tenure the Whitworth underwent a £12 million expansion and revamp, designed by architects Muma.

She has also published several books and essays on African-American urban culture and gender.
