MUBI unveils new ident by Lucy Raven
MUBI — the on-demand film service which gives users the chance to watch just 30 films at any one time — is Netflix for those of us out there who wear Daunt Books tote bags and are getting really into natural orange wine from Bulgaria. Largely screening films from the artier end of the spectrum (you can, for example, sit back this Friday evening with the “phantasmagoric contraption of dreamlike rhythm’s and logic,” that is Bertrand Mandico’s The Wild Boys).
For the past year they’ve been using an ident conjured into being by Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn, but now New York-based artist Lucy Raven’s been given the reins. Mubi says that, “Raven takes us back to the magic of the early days of film-making with flickering projections of different test patterns,” which is a very accurate description of the work that Lucy’s turned in for the subscription service. This also isn’t the first time Lucy and MUBI have worked together; back in late-2016 they collaborated on her first UK solo show at the Serpentine gallery.
Anyone attending any of the MUBI-related screenings taking place at this year’s London Film Festival — which include a spooky showing of the remake of horror classic Suspiria — will get to feast their eyes on Lucy’s homage to the foundations of the form while remembering to turn their phone off.
