David Shrigley offers his take on optical art in a new show

Date
17 March 2016

Turner Prize-winning artist David Shrigley opens his eighth solo show Drawings and Paintings at the Stephen Friedman Gallery in London today. For this show the Macclesfield-born artist has turned his hand to optical art, following the footsteps of Bridget Riley, Jesus Rafael Soto and Victor Vasarely.

“The drawings in this exhibition form a fragmented dialogue,” says the gallery. “The viewer is bombarded with messages, in a way that it is pleasantly exciting. Rather than being confusing, the works create a warm buzz of humorous ambiguity.”

In September, Shrigley’s sculpture Really Good, will be unveiled on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.

Drawings and Paintings is at the Stephen Friedman Gallery, London until 23 April.
