Editors pick up the 2018 Best Art Vinyl award
We love music and its ability to always pique the interest of creatives here at It’s Nice That. So, naturally, we were interested to see who’d pick up the gong at this year’s Best Art Vinyl award ceremony. Voted for by the public, the 2018 prize went to British big-stage-rock-miserablists Editors, whose nude and rude sleeve for Violence was designed and photographed by the group’s regular visual collaborator, Rahi Rezvari.
Editors’ lead singer, Tom Smith, says: “I think Rahi took inspiration from the theme of human connection running through the record. His image is as brutal as the title, it is ambiguous and it is beautiful.”
Violence was joined in the all-hallowed top three by the artwork for Cocoa Sugar by Glaswegian group Young Fathers, and Aphex Twin’s typically mind-melting Collapse sleeve.
Last year, rap duo Run the Jewels’ design team, consisting of Timothy Saccenti, Nick Gazin and Troy Hahn, got their hands on the prize, and previous winners also include Thom Yorke (for 2006’s The Eraser), Bright Eyes (who took the top spot in 2012) and Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, who won in 2015 for the cover of Rattle That Lock.
The Editors’ record will now be part of a retrospective exhibition of vinyl record cover design currently on show at London’s O2 Arena.
