ArtReview has published its annual Power 100 list, ranking Swiss curator and Serpentine artistic director Hans Ulrich Obrist as the art world’s most influential person. Gallerists Iwan and Manuela Wirth, also Swiss, who topped the list last year, came in third.
Frances Morris, the newly appointed director of Tate Modern, and soon-to-be-former director of Tate Nicholas Serota are the highest new entries at number five. Three artists feature in the top ten: filmmaker Hito Steyerl is ranked seventh, Wolfgang Tillmans is ninth, and Ai Weiwei is tenth. The rest include gallerists such as David Zwirner and Larry Gagosian, curator Adam Szymczyk and Whitney director Adam D. Weinberg.
Three women feature in the top ten, though Hito Steyerl is the only woman to feature as a solo entry.
Artists entering the list for the first time include Ed Atkins, Raqs Media Collective, Zanele Muholi and Ragnar Kjartansson.
The list is compiled by the magazine in consultation with a panel of writers, artists, curators and critics, with rankings based on an individual’s or group’s “international influence over the production and dissemination of art and ideas within the art world and beyond over the past 12 months”.
The top ten in order is:
Hans Ulrich Obrist
Adam Szymczyk
Iwan and Manuela Wirth
David Zwirner
Nicholas Serota & Frances Morris
Larry Gagosian
Hito Steyerl
Adam D. Weinberg
Wolfgang Tillmans
Ai Weiwei
The full list is published in the latest issue of ArtReview, out today.
