Taryn Simon presents a new and important body of work at Tate Modern; A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters. She intelligently combines text and image to scientific, almost evidencial effect. The series chronicles the nature of chance, fate and inheritance through personal histories by highlighting patterns and codes in stories in the same way they are found in blood. From the “living dead” in India to bitter family feuds in Brazil, all are documented on uniform backgrounds, their image corresponding to a classification of their proximity to the closest living source of the narrative.
