What's On: Robert Mapplethorpe curated by Sofia Copola
The next in a small but notable line high profile cultural figures to curate a Robert Mapplethorpe exhibition is film director Sofia Coppola. The images selected are mostly a removal from how Mapplethorpe would normally be perceived, synonymous as he is for S&M photography that gave him his defiant popularity from their controversial courting back in the 1980s. Instead there is softness to the edgy subjects, and an echo of Coppola’s own isolated ennui that aesthetically tempers her films. Showing until January 7 at Galarie Thaddaeus Ropac in Paris.
