See the world from Thomas Prior's extraordinary point of view
Never having actually met him, I picture Thomas Prior as a particularly light-footed kind of person, able to jump from shadow to shadow something like a superhero in a Marvel comic does to get his shot. Why? If you have a browse of his newest body of work, a collection of images snapped on his recent travels in Asia, you’ll see; he seems to inhabit the quiet spaces that most people wouldn’t rest their eyes on for more than a split second, capturing photographs of situations so fleeting you wonder how he spotted them at all.
Since we first clocked Thomas’ handiwork two years ago, in an extraordinary series about a Mexican celebration of fireworks, we’ve checked in at regular intervals, and we still never fail to be engrossed by his utterly unique perspective. This series of snapshots is even more compelling for the diversity of its subjects; Thomas slips effortlessly from a quiet, up-close shot of an open-mouthed toddler sleeping in her mother’s arms on a train to a wide, almost birds-eye shot of a middle-aged man creating an enormous sheet out of yellow and orange strips of fabric woven together. Thomas is drawn magnet-like to the world’s marvels, identifying a humanity in minute details.
