Things #7: Featuring lots of books filled with pages covered in remarkable things

Date
11 April 2014

It’s a miracle our fingers escaped injury this week; with the amount of books we’ve been handling it was almost certain at least one papercut was on the cards. The risk was worth it though, not only have we acquired some adult colouring books and The Green Soccer Journal’s latest issue, we’ve also had a good time with some freaky acrylics, illustrious illustrations and a book in disguise as a catalogue. Who cares if our fingers were in peril, we live on the edge.

We all have fond childhood memories of colouring in. Most of mine are Disney-themed, but Belly Kids have come up with some more adult-appropriate options – forget those cartoon stills from The Lion King, bring on colouring in Rihanna’s bum! We’re very excited to get started, here’s hoping our years of maturity will also have trained us to keep in between the lines.

Owen Ashworth has sent us a lovely book from Chicago and it’s filled with drawings of famous folk. The pages are star-studded; Alfred Hitchcock and Woody Allen are on the first few, Tarantino, Eastwood and Bigalow are scattered throughout with Wes Anderson bringing up the rear. Each scribbly line sketch is accompanied with a mock signature and note, my personal favourite was Steven Spielberg’s: “Thanks for the E.T. (excellent time).”

The Green Soccer Journal: Issue #6

This is the first ever Spring issue of The Green Soccer Journal because, guess what, they’ve decided to start publishing four issues a year instead of their usual two! They haven’t slackened their level of quality though, legend Lukas Podolski is on the cover and all the photographs, whether in colour or black and white, remain beautiful throughout. Even the football non-enthusiasts among us will be able to appreciate it.

Daniel Zender sent us a lovely selection of goodies this week, and our favourite was a book of his paintings called Light Terrors. As the name quite brazenly suggests, the images are quite haunting, but the intensely bright colour of the acrylics he uses turn them into something almost friendly (almost). It’s an unexpected combination, but the results are incredible!

Shezad Dawood: Black Sun

When this little guy arrived the description said it was a “catalogue”, but we don’t think that gives it the recognition it deserves so we’re going to call it a book, it’s got the title impressed into the cover for goodness’ sake! It was made to support an exhibition curated by Shezad Dawood traveling between India and England exploring the various meanings behind “Black sun”, which range from your standard, run-of-the-mill eclipse to the metaphorical shadows in your soul. It’s pretty intense, but skilfully executed so we like it.
