Steve Frykholm on his Herman Miller picnic posters in this lovely short film
Having worked at Herman Miller for 45 years, the vice president of creative design Steve Frykholm was taken on as the furniture company’s first in-house graphic designer. In the beautifully made short film created by Dress Code specifically for Herman Miller, Steve talks us through some of his most celebrated work – the posters he created for the brand’s annual picnic.
Creating the first poster in 1970 these posters are now considered modern design classics and sit in permanent museum collections all over the world, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Capturing picnic staples in a luxuriously graphic aesthetic, we see close-ups of a latticed cherry pie, cascading peach slices and mustard draping itself over a hotdog. As Steve explains how he created the posters, the film also shows the team reprinting his first ever picnic poster where a set of gnashers chow down on a golden yellow corn on the cob.
