From BTS to Le Sserafim, Sparks Edition is the design studio creating album visuals for all your favourite K-pop stars
Based out of Seoul, Joon-oh Jang and Ji-hye A are the go-to graphic designers for K-pop's ever-changing visual landscape.
At It’s Nice That, we’ve covered the ways in which graphic design and K-pop often intersect and overlap. Often, the world of K-pop puts great time, attention and thought into the graphic design they use to market idols and groups. That’s why we’re now obsessed with Sparks Edition, a design studio based out of Seoul in South Korea. Founded by artists Joon-oh Jang and Ji-hye A, Sparks Edition is working at the top of its game within its home country. Their remit expands far beyond K-pop, but you’d be forgiven for being instantly drawn to the slew of famous clientele. “We really enjoy album design because we find it intriguing to visualise the intangible realm of music to captivating visuals,” Ji-hye tells us. As artists with a multimedia background, they enjoy incorporating material art into graphics – such as their glossy marble-textured design for Le Sserafim’s second album.
“For the K-pop genre, we passionately translate album concepts into instinctive brand identity designs,” Ji-hye adds. “Such as when collaborated with Joon-oh Jang's sculpture artwork for 10CM's first album and my painting for Yugeom's debut album.” In the Yugeom album design project, the studio designed a flower pop-up paper to effectively showcase the album artwork. As Sparks Edition continues to be one of the leading design agencies in South Korea, we can’t wait to see what projects they pop up with next.
