The Afghanistan war has been an ongoing subject of controversy and sadness. Norfolk addresses this with his photographic series – a fascinating, informed body of work revealing multiple layers and insights into a country that has been plagued by war over the last decade. Scenes of military occupation, abandoned construction sites, vacant buildings, and ruins are juxtaposed against striking landscapes and images of the “part Disney, part wedding cake” new Afghan architecture. The series was conceived as a collaboration, responding to the 19th Century photographer John Burke’s Afghan war scenes over 100 years ago. Well worth a look.
