Shrey Kathuria’s audiovisual design rejects any singular style or genre

For the designer Shrey Kathuria, consistently mixing up technique and approach is an essential practice. “My work often rejects a singular style or type,” he says. “I like to disrupt the monotony that comes with doing only one kind of work – be it with forms, colours or sounds.” At just a glance across his portfolio this variation transpires, a heady mix of textures, type and palettes come together to create something full of unique parts yet still unified.

The one thread that does run throughout all of Shrey’s recent work however is a passion for music and the audiovisual. Currently, he leads the graphic design at the One Little Independent Records, where he creates album artworks, gig flyers and visualisers for a range of artists. Shrey’s love of music also informs his other pastimes, including a residency at the Palestinian radio station Radio AlHara, where he delves into South Asian experimental music, new and old.

Shrey’s visual investigation of sound doesn’t stop at music however, and some of his work uses sound in more abstract ways; for example, his kinetic typography experimentations. The chosen words are often those stuck in Shrey’s head, brought to life with motion and then put in time with processed sounds he’s composed, found on his iPhone or in an online archive, or even recorded from his own mouth.
