Raphaëlle Martin creates a series of surreally fun Magritte-inspired gifs

Ever looked at the paintings of René Magritte and thought how much better they’d be if they jigged around a bit? Well Germany-based artist Raphaëlle Martin did, so he created this animated tribute to the late surrealist painter.

Some of Magritte’s most famous works have had subtle but wonderful movements added to them in this charming series. Le Fils De L’Homme has the apple on an axis, La Trahison des Images sees a petite puff of smoke billowing out of the pipe and the floating baguettes of Le Legende Dorée rotate mystically. The illustrator has taken his interpretation of Magritte’s work further by amping up the original colours to golden yellows and candy reds, increasing their ethereal whimsy.
