Kicking off this extra dollop of Nicer Tuesdays goodness was the multi-talented London-based artist Adébayo Bolaji. Dialling in from Berlin where he’d just set up his latest exhibition, Adébayo took us through his early years spent as a child actor, which unexpectedly took him down the road to becoming an artist. Physically walking us through the gallery space, the artist – known for his paintings, drawings and sculptures – discussed the ins and outs of the solo show Between Two Worlds; touching on the story behind the title, what it means, and of course, several artworks featured in the show.
“When choosing a show title, let the work lead, do not impose,” he says. In short, this pretty much sums up Adébayo’s practice, allowing the work to speak for itself. Offering the lowdown of one painting in particular, The Crossover, the artist pinpoints specific symbols which map out an overall story on the canvas. He ends the talk by answering a few questions from It’s Nice That and the Nicer Tuesdays audience on how his style has developed over time, concluding: “If you stay curious, inevitably, your work will evolve.”
