Let’s get physical! Nicer Tuesdays returns to London’s Oval Space for October’s event

This month, we’re delighted to welcome Nicer Tuesdays back to London’s Oval Space for a whopping event championing creativity across a range of disciplines. Since physical events shut down all over the world in March 2020, we’ve dearly missed the monthly hubbub and the chance to welcome hundreds of people to the east London venue to unite in a celebration of cutting-edge creativity. After a whirlwind global tour of virtual talks, we’re so excited to be returning to a physical format. And we hope we’ll see you there as well!

On Tuesday 26 October at 6:30 pm, we’ll be joined by type foundry Monotype, filmmaker Iggy London, digital collective Keiken and photographer Nina Manandhar. These four speakers will be taking us through a range of exciting new projects and covering a variety of different themes and topics, from variable fonts to poetry. As we reopen our doors to the public, we want to ensure all our attendees feel safe in Oval Space and we are doing everything we can to protect our guests. With this in mind, we’ve reduced the overall capacity of the event and we’ll be carrying out temperature checks at the door. Hand-sanitiser dispensers will be available to use throughout the building and a ventilation system will ensure as much airflow is circulated through the venue as possible.

There are a few things we’d also like our guests to comply with before attending the event. For everyone’s health and safety, we’re advising all attendees to take a lateral flow test before coming out. We also encourage everyone to wear masks in the queue and when interacting with our staff, though we recognise this is a personal choice. Please respect other people’s space and, most of all, if you or anyone you live with has Covid-19 symptoms, please stay at home.

To welcome this new era of Nicer Tuesdays back to Oval Space, we’re also excited to partner with El Rayo Tequila, which will be providing each attendee with a complimentary drink. On another note, please be aware that photography and filming may be taken at this event for marketing and promotional purposes. If you do not want to be photographed or filmed, please speak to our team on the day. Also, please bring ID with you to the venue as this is an 18+ event.

A few months ago, renowned type foundry Monotype announced the release of the much-anticipated Helvetica Now variable font. Designed to maintain its classic simplicity but with added flexibility and expression, the new variable font updates arguably the most famous typeface in history with 21st Century design needs in mind. Taking us through the ins and outs of the highly technical project is creative type director Tom Foley, who will be joining us at October’s Nicer Tuesdays with a behind-the-scenes lowdown. Discussing the infinite shades of expression made possible with the typographic animations, Tom will explain the complex technicalities of building a variable font and explain its cultural importance stepping forward into a digital-first future – combining the art of typography with technology and history. We can’t wait to hear from Tom later this month.

Award-winning filmmaker, artist and writer Iggy London is known predominantly for his moving films touching on themes of identity, community, race and coming-of-age narratives. Most notably, his short film Velvet won Best Experimental Film at the Thunderdance Cannes Film Festival. Currently signed to Iconoclast, he has directed films for the likes of Nowness, Nike, Adidas and Love Magazine, to name a few. At October’s Nicer Tuesdays, the London-based director will talk us through his latest release, a short film for Harrods titled Set Your Stage, which features a poem by Kai Isaiah Jamal. Walking us through the beautifully shot campaign, Iggy will also provide a taste of other memorable projects and share insights from his career trajectory so far.

Known for exploring contemporary global youth identity and the meaning of style, the London-based photographer has made a name for herself through beautifully intimate and pensive portraits, often documenting the many facets of multicultural London. To date, Nina has worked with Getty on a series of inclusive stock photos, documented the sons of London’s Gurkha community, captured the dynamic essence of British style and much, much more in her varied practice. Later this month, she’ll join us to discuss the art of portraiture while running us through some of the most significant themes underlying her work.

Founded by Tanya Cruz, Hana Omori and Isabel Ramos, Keiken is the collaborative digital practice creating thought-provoking and aesthetically powerful interactive games and CGI films. Based between London and Berlin, the collective questions our understanding of reality through an immersive practice in the form of AR, VR, film, performance and world-building. At October’s Nicer Tuesdays, Keiken will talk us through its latest game, Wisdowms for Love 3.0., a project which started out as a five-channel immersive installation and which is now a free crypto game made in collaboration with obso1337. In the game, users can explore the metaverse and are encouraged to collect free wisdom tokens and posters, all while galavanting through a digital world where positive affirmations are the norm. We’ll hear more about the fascinating ideas behind the game, not to mention how it was made, in Keiken’s Nicer Tuesdays talk.
