Subculture, art and fashion in Anglo-Japanese publication Mother
Anglo-Japanese magazine Mother feels like it could be an editorial answer to Comme des Garçons in the way it allows subsets of eastern and western culture to coalesce. Dreamed up by London-based photographer Kate Friend, Mother has turned out three issues in the last 18 months, and the freshly-printed fourth – which follows the sweeping theme of liberation – only confirms that each one is stronger than the last.
The magazine is beautifully designed by Paris studio Akatre, whose expressive, post-grunge typography dances in between striking editorials, including a designer’s exclusive for Dover Street Market Ginza, and interviews between emerging creatives and subcultural pin-ups like performance artists Boychild and Wu Tsang (both Hood By Air collaborators). Despite its distinctly futuristic spirit, Mother is a proudly tactile object and is printed on top-quality paper stocks from specialist paper mill Fedrigoni. You can find a copy in any of its discerning stockists, including Colette, Tate, and Dover Street Market.
