Forty-two years in the making, !Women Art Revolution (or WAR) is the definitive film about feminist art, and goes a long way to writing a lot of histories that have been neglected. The product of hundreds of hours of interviews, it was made by pioneering artist Lynn Hershman Leeson. She’s a forerunner of Cindy Sherman, and spent most of the 1970s taking self-portraits and generally living life as the virtual character Roberta Breitman. If you need any more reasons to see !WAR, it’s scored by Carrie Brownstein (formerly of Sleater-Kinney). There are screenings at the Whitechapel Gallery for the next month or so.
