“Simplicity with intention”: How Ludmila Zurdo’s fashion background influences her design practice
Having transformed her practice to become a graphic designer, this freelancer utilises her unique creative background with brilliant results.
For several years, the Argentinian-born Ludmila Zurdo worked in the fashion industry before switching the gears and transitioning into graphic design. While Ludmila now focuses primarily on packaging and branding, she also still loves to work on merch and clothing prints as a way of bringing her fashion background into her current work. “Fashion really helped me understand how to use colours, composition, and storytelling,” Ludmila adds, “creating something that feels just right,” an equilibrium she achieves through an earnest creative maxim – one of purpose and restraint.
“I’m all about simplicity with intention,” Ludmila explains, “designs that are clean but have meaning behind them.” This simplicity is important when considering the playful nature of Ludmila’s creative approach: “I like to play around with shapes, colours, typography, textures, and images,” she says, often finding an acute balance between detail and frivolity.
Outside of design, Ludmila’s inspirations are cinematic in nature, taking inspiration from the visual worlds of her favourite directors, those renowned for their playful approach to graphic design, sets, costumes and narratives, like Spike Jonze, Wes Anderson, Mike Mills, and Wim Wenders. She also finds great creative joy in walking cities, and peering into museums. “I also get inspired by the places I visit and where I’ve lived, or simply noticing street signs and fashion always provides me with endless creative inspiration,” she ends.
