If you thought that writing a Printed Pages feature about KENZO – in which I delve in glorious technicolour detail into the brand’s past collaborations over the course of a 12-page spread – would stop my perpetual blathering on about them, then I’m afraid you thought wrong. It’s a new season, meaning a whole new visual campaign, and as ever I’m incapable of reining in my admiration for the masterminds behind KENZO’s art direction.
This season they collaborated again with the trusty Toiletpaper team to create a series of images which feel cooler than previous offerings. Sure, they still stand out a mile from any other campaign you might come across, but this season saw Maurizio, Pierpaolo and Micol play with laid back blues, surreal CGI cities and Magritte-like clouds to embrace a more elegant vision. Once again it’s backed up with a short film to elucidate the trio’s bizarre ideas, bringing a new meaning to authenticity. But when it comes to KENZO, we wouldn’t expect anything less.
