The world captured through Jonathan May’s lens looks pretty bonkers. The eccentric subjects he documents seem like caricatures and parodies of their context. He embraces a sense of absurdity – way too muscly men, lamas etc – as well as building a clear concept and narrative. Looking through his portfolio of personal, portrait and advertising work, it’s often unclear how staged the scenarios really are. May’s talents have been acknowledged worldwide: The Embrace was exhibited as part of the Taylor Wessing Portrait prize 2011 and he was voted by Luerzer’s Archive Magazine in the top 200 Ad photographers worldwide for 2012/2013.
