We check in with Ed Cheverton, busiest collage and toy-maker in town

Date
23 July 2015

Ed Cheverton (or Chedward Beaverdam, as his website would have you call him) is an illustrator whose knack for chopping up reams of brightly coloured paper and arranging them into slices of joy has him set on a road to success. He’s a master of anthropomorphism, whether on paper, where an offcut is transformed into a tiny cheeky head with the aid of two eyes and a mouth, or in 3D form, making funny little toys out of wood, plastic, cotton reels and the like. He was also one of our Graduates of 2013, which makes us one of his number one fans, and legitimises all of our gushing. Right?

Checking in with Ed this week, it quickly becomes apparent that underneath this cool, playful, lo-fi exterior is an extremely well developed work ethic. Between working on his very first children’s book Meet the Circus which is due out later on this year (some sneak peeks of which you can see below!) and travelling the country’s comics and zine fairs with his small press Jazz Dad Books, through which he also self publishes much of his work, Ed has still found time to maintain his Postcard Club, a Tumblr on which illustrators shun emails in favour of trading handmade postcards. He’s also built some of his toys for an exhibition in Bristol, for the YCN shop and for a feature in WIRED. Busy man!
