Anyone in New York between now and June should check out the Bye Bye Kitty!!! exhibition at Japan Society. It features sixteen artists invigorating the Japanese contemporary art scene, and marks a departure from the celebration of Hello Kitty / kawaii (cute) culture. Tomoko Shioyasu is one of the sixteen and her beguiling installations caught my eye. The hand crafted pieces, referencing patterns found in nature, are created through a painstaking process of repetitive cuts in large panels of synthetic paper, and take around six months to produce. The turbulent currents depicted, lend a particular poignancy to the work.
