French graphic design studio Appelle Moi Papa shows us who’s the daddy
From labels for raspberry lager to storey-high graphics, the portfolio of Nantes-based studio Appelle Moi Papa shouts pastel-hued joie de vivre. Music is a reoccurring theme in its growing oeuvre: it’s created exhibition graphics and silkscreen prints for Pitchfork Music Festival, branding for indie event La Soufflerie and a punchy, geometric poster for Jamie XX’s most recent dates in Paris. The team even has a knack for making seemingly dull subjects look cool – take their identity for Saint-Nazaire’s town planning agency Addrn for a first rate example.
Founded in 2010, its five members were drawn together by their love for screen printing and decided to set up the studio when post-recession economics meant entry level studio jobs in France were scarce. An interest in printing processes still colours their approach, as does a sense of collectivism – the studio operates as a SCOP (a type of co-operative) and each member decides on whether to take on a project as well as playing a vital role in every step of a job. Recent projects have included an interactive audio-visual installation with Organic Orchestra, a magazine-style programme for an event at live music venue Barakason, set design for shop windows at Galeries Lafayette and the branding, menu design, large scale signage for La Cantine du Voyage, a seasonal 300 cover restaurant in a former industrial hangar. With such a spritely array, we can’t wait to see what they come up with next.
