Amanda Baeza illustrated interpretations of Reddit user's requests
Amanda Baeza is a half-Chilean, half-Portuguese artist who originally studied music and graphic design before focusing on illustration. Together with her siblings, Amanda has been creating zines under the name of Mr.Spogui inviting other creatives to contribute articles and artwork on a random topic for each issue.
However it was a personal project by Amanda that caught our eye, a project that instantly made our eyes widen and stifle our chuckles. “I was looking for a project where I could draw quickly, almost mindlessly, to decompress from commissions,” the illustrator explains. When someone mentioned a Reddit group where people share pictures for strangers to draw, Amanda found her perfect outlet, creating illustrative interpretations to send back to Reddit users randomly.
To achieve this Amanda created stylistic rules “such as a format of tarot cards and a colour palette I could stick to so I don’t waste too much time with experimentation.” The result is a collection of hilarious pastel drawings, with an easily digestible consistent structure, organised almost like singular comic strips. Once completed, the illustrator started to send her portraits to the online strangers: “The reaction was very positive, which kept me motivated.” From there the illustrator began to reach out to her followers, friends or even favourite artists to keep the series as a surprise. “Nobody knows if or when they are going to receive a tarot portrait from me in their box,” says Amanda
It is worth noting that when we asked to see more pieces from this collection, Amanda sent back over 50 illustrations – each one better than the last. See more of her illustrations here or maybe send her your own request.
