During this year’s Open House London I had the pleasure of looking around a very small original two bed apartment in the Alexander Road Estate. Designed by Neave Brown (Camden Town Department of Architecture) and completed in 1978, the idea was to apply the principles found in London terrace housing to a modern high-density public housing project. What I enjoyed most was how considered and intelligent everything was – the rooms are well proportioned, radiators are hidden inside the walls, cupboards are built in, natural light is taken advantage of and sliding partitions are used to divide up open spaces.
