A Communications Primer

Date
4 August 2011

A Communications Primer (1953) is an instructional/educational film made by designers Charles and Ray Eames (US) on behalf of IBM. It is now held in the collection of the Library of Congress’ Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division. The film is based loosely on “A Mathematical Theory of Communication,” Claude Shannon’s seminal 1948 text on information theory. The film’s music was composed by Elmer Bernstein. Charles himself holds down the voiceover. Wholly prescient given its publication date.
