The Saatchi Gallery launches search for the most creative selfies from around the world
The Saatchi gallery in London has launched a competition to offer artists, photographers, and enthusiasts the chance to have their most creative selfies exhibited as part of the #saatchiselfie competition.
“This international competition offers a chance to be part of a worldwide cultural phenomenon and for entrants to express themselves, by exploring and advancing the creative potential of the selfie today,” says the Gallery.
The prize will be judged by a panel of artists and “forward-thinkers” and the overall winner will be announced at the launch of the exhibition From Selfie to Self Expression on 30 March 2017. The shortlist of ten winners will receive a Huawei smart phone. “Entries must take the form of a photographic selfie,” says the Saatchi Gallery. “We encourage entries that are experimental and innovative that take the selfie in exciting new directions.”
From Selife to Self Expression, “will be the world’s first exhibition exploring the history of the selfie from Diego Velazquez to the present day, while celebrating the truly creative potential of a form of expression often derided for its inanity. Showing alongside examples of many influential artists’ work will be selfies that have quickly become icons of the digital era – from the beautiful and sublime to the mad, bad and downright dangerous.”
