Gender diversity colouring book features illustrations by David Shrigley and Olafur Eliasson
David Shrigley and Olafur Eliasson are two of 30 contributors to a new colouring book about gender diversity. Curated by education and gender sociologist Cecilie Nørgaard, the publication Art Colouring Book — Facing Gender Diversity features a hugely varied set of illustrations that aim to spur awareness in an unconventional and creative way.
“We asked [the artists] to create their idea of a visual expression that opens reflections on gender and diversity,” says Cecilie. “The outcome is a book packed with a wide range of funny, serious, abstract, concrete and challenging works of art.”
Each artist has created new artworks for the book, published by Mangfold Publishing, with a largely Scandinavian roster as well as some international contributors. Other artists include Gardar Eide Einarsson, Superflex, Elmgreen & Dragset, Jesper Just, Sara Trier, Thomas Poulsen aka FOS, Ida Felicia Noack, Catherine Raben Davidsen and Richard Colman.
By making it into a colouring book, Cecilie hopes to further engage people with the topic, inviting them to colour in, pull out and display the images. “In this way the receiver becomes a co-creator in forming and reinterpreting the way gender and normality is typically perceived.”
