Boys boys boys: the photographs of Yann Faucher
Yann Faucher’s photographs are a window into a Never-Neverland world where freckled boys never seem to grow up.
“I largely shoot boys or guys as it has always been something easier for me: as I am a guy myself, I empathize,” the London-based photographer tells It’s Nice That. “I can always relate to them… There is somehow a translation, something that I can catch. Lots of them are friends and I love from time to time taking their pictures. I always loved listening to what they have to say about their life, it’s like reading a book. I try to document it in my own way.”Grass stains, flushed faces and sweat, Yann’s camera is often focused on carefree marks of freedom which hint at an unspoken sexuality. Male youth, Yann says, carries with it “a fragility and also sometimes a more direct attitude”. That’s not to say he only shoots boys, although his female casting is less than typical. “I am not sure if the girls that I am shooting are that androgynous, though I have never been bothered by genders or the way people want to see it in our society. I can find cross-dressing interesting when it suits a person and when it’s done tastefully.”
Yann’s best and most intimate work goes on his Tumblr rather than his website. “I have plenty of freedom when I am shooting for me,” Yann explains. “Editorials are a small part of my work after all, but it is something that I am enjoying, sometimes. I rely more on my personal work though.”
