Tom Clohosy Cole's new book is an extraordinary take on the Berlin Wall
There were poignant scenes in Berlin yesterday when the city marked the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the wide-ranging ramifications it had for the city, the country and indeed the world. Unsurprisingly such an historic milestone inspired various creative projects, from the terrific 8,000 balloon installation which ran the length of the old wall to Airbnb’s animation about reunification and remembering.
Our favourite though came from illustrator Tom Clohosy Cole, whose extraordinary book WALL tells the story of a family ripped apart when their father was stranded in the West following the division of the city. In gorgeously evocative imagery it tells the tale of the family’s attempts to find each other and uses a very human story to explore this complex social, historical and political event. Tom has form when it comes to making art inspired by historical events (as we saw in his Space Race book) and WALL suggests that both his storytelling and image-making skills are developing apace.
