Lernert & Sander creates slick film for Lensvelt’s “boring” collection of furniture

Dutch filmmaking duo Lernert & Sander has created this film for Breda-based furniture company Lensvelt to promote The Boring Collection, a series of grey office furniture. Conceived by Lensvelt and architect studio Space Encounters, the collection is “a comment on the ‘ugly’ appearance of affordable contract furniture and the distracting designs being added to some workplaces,” says Lernert & Sander. The film, called 16:59, echoes the sentiment by reenacting the “most iconic gesture of boredom” – the act of throwing a paper ball into a bin until it’s home time.

In the film, the furniture is moved into a clock-like formation and two people throw paper balls into surrounding bins mimicking the seconds ticking by. “The office people steal the scene even though they are surrounded by the designs of The Boring Collection – just like the architects intended,” says the duo. Slick, hypnotic and perfectly executed, the film adopts a similar minimal aesthetic to their work for COS and the music video for De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig shot last year.

Lernert & Sander has also created images for the collection’s still campaign which sees them stack the furniture on top of each other emulating Ettore Sottsass’ Carlton bookcase, “the most ‘unboring furniture piece we could imagine.” The concept will be repeated at the Salone de Mobile this year with an installation of 150,000 paper balls and the furniture configured into a clock face once again.
