You could argue that even a video of Jeanne Damas cleaning out a blocked drain would be enjoyable, but how refreshing to see France’s answer to Alexa Chung doing something rather curious in this nice little film from & Other Stories. They recruited filmmaker Wendy McColm to venture into the beautiful parquet-floored apartment of Jeanne Damas to capture her portraying the “tormented soul of the self-indulgent ‘Bohemian’ who can’t decide which pieces from & Other Stories’ collection to wear.”
Sound a tad materialistic? It’s actually not. There’s a subtext looming in this film that nods heavily to the generic way women are often represented in fashion films, even making fun of Jeanne herself with its references to this Warhol screen-test-esque film she starred in for CoSTUME National. Watch her flounce around her ludicrously enviable flat in some of the brand’s new dresses and wish you were French, beautiful and a successful blogger, then check out some of director Wendy McColm’s other films, they’re bloody hilarious.
