Karen Mirza and Brad Butler are what I like to call a “power couple”: the two artists have, for over a decade, created work that engages with the public and upends the traditional boundaries between artist and audience. Previous projects like The Museum of Non Participation (an installation in Karachi, Pakistan) are underpinned by collective themes of participation and utilising mixed mediums to document the “performance” of everyday life. Their upcoming film Hold Your Ground – conceived especially for the Canary Wharf site – dissects the “semantics” of large crowd protests, examining the role of vocality during the Arab Spring.
