“In a small apartment in Buenos Aires, an old woman eagerly awaits the birth of her grandchild…” an innocuous beginning to an animated testimonial of a woman who is forced to wait for over 30 years to be a grandmother owing to the traumatic ramifications of the dictatorship which ran Argentina until 1983. Abuelas is a documentary, directed by the Iranian-born Afarin Eghbal that uses animation as a device to describe the issues of memory and loss with extraordinary explanatory and creative effect.
