Apartamento’s first photobook: A children’s A-Z featuring the mag’s many collaborators
Children’s ABC books are two a penny, but few, if any, boast contributions from photographers like Juergen Teller, Wolfgang Tillmans and Terry Richardson. Cue Apartamento’s foray into book publishing, ABC: Fotos, a children’s book and photographic A-Z which includes work from almost all the photographers who collaborate with the Barcelona-based interiors magazine. The playful images inside range from jam squirting out of doughnuts to spoons balancing on noses. Inspired by and dedicated to a friend’s baby, all proceeds from the colourful book go to the Enriqueta Villavecchia Foundation.
“We thought it was a good way of presenting the photographers we worked with and even though it’s not the complete list, it almost is,” explains co-founder and photographer Nacho Alegre. “Many shot a picture specifically for the book and others sent us a picture they had. Some letters were so difficult that it was easier to find a picture in their archives! We tried to find pictures that could, through some narrative, involve the kids in a story. The accompanying words ask questions about the images, like what’s behind them and what they make you dream of. We think it’s a good exercise for children and almost like the work of a picture editor when editing a book.”
